Spam Hooker

“I do “spam” for money”… Some might see here an opportunity to increase personal profit or at least this is what I’ve discovered a couple of days ago at the “Mobile Advertising Congress” when somebody from the audience asked why mobile operators don’t reward customers for allowing them to send commercial messages on their mobile phones.

Interesting enough some others think, from the other part of the game, that such requests could and should be fulfilled. After all, need leads to offer in the current economic framework.

Rude enough I think that such behavior vitiate the process of communication and defies all the principals and achievements of modern advertising. It twists the concept of reciprocity and value transaction in a wicked way and on the long run it will hurt everybody: advertisers, mobile media and the audience.

Any mechanic applied to a media channel that creates information overload and disrespects the needs of the audience is doomed and the channel will suffer on the long run. “Banner blindness”, “Outdoor blindness” are examples that speak for themselves.

On the other hand is it a bad thing to let advertisers know some things about you? I argue not because on the long run only smart brands will survive, brands that understand the importance of relevance and know how to build real value for their customers.

I’ve just received an email from an e-shop trying to sell me some laptops… it went directly to junk and will never bother me again. Please spam me, it’s free…

Video Ads in magazines

CNET News is reporting that CBS will be the first company ever to use a video ad in print this fall in Entertainment Weekly. The network will be advertising its Monday prime-time lineup, in partnership with PepsiCo, which will be promoting Pepsi Max. The technology for the battery-powered ads was manufactured by a Los Angeles-based company called Americhip. Too bad the creative looks like the typical garbage the networks run. Kind of a wasted opportunity.
Details about the technology:
• Each ad can handle about 40 minutes of video.
• The screen, which is 2.7 millimeters thick, has a 320×240 resolution.
• The battery lasts for about 65 to 70 minutes, and can be recharged, with a mini USB cord via a jack on the back of it.
• The screen, which uses thin film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT LCD) technology, is enforced by protective polycarbonate.

“Yanko Design reports on the concept by designer Tommaso Gecchelin:

Gecchelin reasons if Apple were to go small, flexibility may be more important than hard rigidness – a trend current Apple laptops buck because they’re in favor of unibody construction. Flexible OLED technology may be the key because it can provide the rich color and resolution density needed for a smaller screen without being a power hog and resists damage by its malleable nature, “The thinnest screens now are barely 8mm thick and can fold like a piece of paper.”

The core of this concept is a technology he calls iSpine. Like the spine of a book, the tech avoid excessive compression on the screen, yet allows the laptop to sit in multiple viewing positions. Go from a normal laptop with screen and touchscreen board – to a large widescreen canvas for drawing, presentation or movie watching. To keep everything minimal, ports like power, the mini display, and additional USB are externalized on a ‘Magic Dock’ to keep most of the laptop slim and clean of an array of holes and plugs.” (see link)

“This is an ephemeral world where nothing is ever finished, where digital technology allows people to continuously cut, paste, mash-up, redesign, integrate and experiment. A world called ‘perpetual beta’. The days when six months was spent refining a marketing program to perfection are long gone.

When the target audience is able to ‘mess with a message’, it’s more important to put work out (’beta it’) on new and emerging platforms, gauge the response (good or bad), and then keep the stories living and breathing with continuous input from the consumer.”
